Lakes in Goa

Mayem Lake

Goa has some more things to offer. It is 35 km. from Panaji, this artificial lake surrounded amidst rolling green hills is an ideal picnic spot. In fact those interested in experiencing a bit of the rural Goa, the village can revel in the experience here in Mayem. Rural Goa is verdant more so than the bustling city of Panaji or Mapusa or even Margoa.

People visit places like Mayem Lake: a calm spread of water with geese and pedal boats, cottages hidden in the wooded slopes. If you visit Goa, one must visit Mayem, too. Good cottages are available for accommodation. Boating is also available .

Carambolim Lake

The Lily-covered Carambolim Lake has enormous amount of waterfowl, many egrets and heron, bronze-winged and pheasant-tailed Jacana and thousands of exotic species such as Comb Duck and Cotton Pygmy-goose can be seen. Close to Carambolim is the Ciba-Geigy Chemical-Works which has created a pleasant nature reserve. Here you may sight Open-billed storks, Purple and Grey Heron, Little Cormorant and Marsh Harriers.

Waterfalls in Goa

Dudhsagar Waterfalls

With a name that means “sea of milk,” the Dudhsagar Waterfalls are spectacular and imposing, with water cascading almost 2,000 feet down a cliff to a rock-ribbed valley. Pack refreshments and bath towels, and plan to spend a morning here. It isn’t difficult to find a private nook, but watch your step – the rocks are slippery. Monkeys, birds, bees, butterflies, and thick foliage complete the wild experience. The ideal time for a trek here is early summer or just after the monsoon season; during monsoon season the approach road is often inaccessible. The Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) runs tours to Dudhsagar on Saturday and Sunday from Panaji and Calangute. The tours include the waterfall and the nearby Tamdi Surla Temple built by the Kadambas. You could also take a train to Dudhsagar from Madgaon (Margao) and get there in an hour and half. In early summer, when the level of the water is low, you can hire a Jeep and access the foot of the falls from either Molem or Collem.

Arvalem Waterfalls

Arvalem Waterfalls cascades down from the mountains, from a height of 50 mt, this waterfall is a amazing experience. The spot can be best viewed after the monsoons. The Government has also developed a park from which the view of the waterfall can be seen peacefully.

The Rock cut caves is just situated nearby. Situated in Sanquelim. There is Buddhist cave temples here that were later converted for worship to Shiva. The waterfalls are formed at the end of a small gorge and are worth viewing especially during the monsoons. Near the waterfall, is the temple of Sri Rudreshwar and this site is important for the religious function to appease the souls of the departed Hindu religion followers on the 12th day of the death.

Kesarval Spring

Kesarval Spring is 22 km away from Panaji on Verna plateau just off the Panaji-Margao highway, the spring emerges from hard and compact rocks and people bathe in its water with strong belief that it has medicinal properties.
