Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary
Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary occupies 85.65 sq km in Canacona taluka in south-eastern Goa. The Talpona River flows through the sanctuary and the Galjibaga River runs along Cotigao's south-eastern boundary. Vegetation here comprises mostly tall trees of the moist deciduous type, with some trees attaining heights of up to 30 metres. There are a lot of residential dwellings adjoining the reserve with a few still remaining inside, so Cotigao's forests aren't as undisturbed as Mollem's. It is however, comparatively less developed for tourism; not that it doesn't get its fair share of visitors. As you move through the sanctuary, the cool greenery is refreshing. Bird calls and other jungel sounds echo through the forest, amidst the intermittent, almost cacophonous, chorus of crickets. Animals including wild boar, langur, bison, deer, leopards, wild cat, pangolin and the black panther have been spotted here. Things to See and DoThe bumpy road, farily rough in parts, will test your navigational skills but adds to the sense of adventure. In this sanctuary too are charming bandharas and several waterholes. Climb into the small 3-m high watchtower at the Tulsimol watering hole, from where you can watch the animals come to drink, especially in the early morning and late evening.Trek along the mud trails. Take the trail at Bhutpal, also within the precincts, and climb the 18-m tall ladder into a treeop shelter for a breathtaking view of a waterhole nearby and its surrounds. Walk to Bela Lake, inside the sanctuary, 2 1/2 km from the Hathipal Eco-tourism Complex, a beautifully tranquil location. The ancient temple at Kuskem at the far end of the sanctuary, 12 km from Hathipal, is also well worth exploring. A visit to the many botanical and faunal exhibits at the Nature Interpretation Centre is an interesting diversion. Close to the sanctuary is the centuries-old Jeevotham Parthagal Math, a renowned centre for Vedic studies. At Poinguinim, 3 km from Hathipla, is a temple dedicated to Lord Parshurama. You could also plan a day's picnic at the beautiful Palolem or Galjibaga beaches near by. Where to Stay and EatThe Forest Department's Hathipal Eco-tourism Complex has a 6-bedded cottage, a 3-bedded cottage and 5 thatched tents, all sharing a common toilet. A canteen serves Goan food, but since this is a remote area, at least a day's notice is advisable if you want to eat here, so that provisions can be stocked. There is also a Forest Rest House at Poinguinim, mostly used by forest officers.
